Tamaskan Health
Tamaskans as a whole are generally healthy, having few serious genetic health conditions. This primarily being the joint effort of the registry and individual breeders extensive health testing, ensuring the only healthy dogs are being bred, as well as the transparency in reporting health conditions that arise in individual dogs, so that carriers and potential carriers of these conditions can be identified. In this way, reputable breeders can ensure that carrier (or potential carrier) bloodlines are not purposefully crossed, thereby preventing future 'at risk' offspring.
The Tamaskan breeding program currently has an open studbook and new carefully-selected outcrosses are added to the genepool on a fairly regular basis. This means that the breed as a whole has a very low COI (level of inbreeding) and, therefore, not as many recessive disorders compared to most closed-studbook dog breeds. Notable health issues in the Tamaskan breed, which only affect a very small percentage of the overall population, include:

Testing At Kaiza
Breeding dogs are all health tested in accordance with the ITR requirements, with additional testing on our own accord. Breeding dogs have hips x-rayed and scored through the Orthopedics Foundation of America (OFA) as well as PennHip. Elbows are x-rayed and scored with OFA. Cardiac Auscultations done annually by a board certified cardiologist. Eyes are checked annually by a board certified Ophthalmologist. All breeding dogs are DNA tested through Embark for over 200 genetic conditions, including Degenerative Myelopathy (DM).
Additionally, our puppies are all individually DNA profiled via Embark before they go home, as well as getting eye exams and microchips as part of their health exam. Puppy buyers will get a copy of their Embark results in their Puppy Portfolios. You can also access each Embark profile HERE.
